Small Pet Food & Hay
Small pets, big personalities.
For rabbits and guinea pigs, hay comes first: it should be most of what they eat, every day. Add a measured amount of nuggets made for that species, some fresh greens and only the occasional treat. Hamsters, gerbils and rats need a mix made for them.

Best everyday hay
Science Selective Timothy Hay
Why we picked it
Hay is the one thing a rabbit needs unlimited amounts of, and a single-ingredient bag means you know exactly what's going in regardless of which batch you buy. UK grown also means one less supply chain to worry about.

Best dried grass
Friendly Readigrass
Why we picked it
Drying rather than curing keeps more of fresh grass's actual smell and flavour, which is the practical reason to choose it over a standard hay bag for a fussy eater. At 28% fibre it's doing real dietary work, not just bulking out the bowl.

Best small pet treat
Vetiq Healthy Bites Nutri Booster Small Animal Treats
Why we picked it
The deciding point on VETIQ Healthy Bites Nutri Booster Small animal Treats is wheat flour, canola oil, corn starch, wheat gluten and coconut oil. Its complementary status is just as important, because the product belongs alongside a suitable complete diet rather than replacing one.

A little guidance
What goes in the bowl
| Pet | Most of the diet | Add |
|---|---|---|
| Rabbit | Good hay or grass, unlimited | A small measure of rabbit nuggets and fresh leafy greens. |
| Guinea pig | Good hay, unlimited | Guinea pig nuggets and a daily source of vitamin C. |
| Hamster | A hamster mix or nuggets | Tiny amounts of fresh vegetables and the odd treat. |
Hay is food, not bedding
The RSPCA advises that a rabbit needs a bundle of good hay or grass at least as big as itself every day. Chewing hay wears down teeth that never stop growing and keeps the gut moving.
Guinea pigs need the same: plenty of fresh hay at all times. Keep it clean and dry, and replace anything soiled or damp.
Nuggets, not muesli
Muesli-style mixes let rabbits pick out the tasty parts and leave the rest, which the RSPCA links to dental and digestive problems. A single-component nugget means every bite is balanced.
Feed nuggets in measured amounts, following the pack. Too much leaves less room for hay, which is the part that matters most.
Guinea pigs need vitamin C every day
Like people, guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C. Choose a guinea pig nugget, not a rabbit one, and give fresh vegetables such as leafy greens or pepper daily.
Vitamin C added to water breaks down quickly, so food is a more reliable source.
Treats in small amounts
Fruit and sugary treats should be occasional and tiny. A sudden change of diet can upset a small pet’s gut, so add anything new a little at a time.
Fresh water should always be available. If a small pet stops eating or passing droppings, treat it as urgent and call your vet the same day.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions
How much hay does a rabbit need?
At least a bundle as big as the rabbit every day, and unlimited access. Hay should be most of the diet.
Can guinea pigs eat rabbit food?
No. Rabbit food lacks the vitamin C guinea pigs need, so use a guinea pig food.
Is muesli bad for rabbits?
The RSPCA advises against it, because rabbits pick out parts and leave an unbalanced diet. Nuggets are better.
