Sensitive & Hypoallergenic Dog Food

Good food. Happy tails.

Sensitive recipes keep the ingredient list short and the proteins few, which makes them easier on some stomachs and easier to check. They are a sensible choice for a dog that does not do well on rich food. A true food allergy is different: that needs a vet-led elimination diet.

Our quick picks

In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

  • Harringtons Just 6 Dry Dog Food Lamb

    Best short ingredient list

Harringtons Just 6 Dry Dog Food Lamb

    Why we picked it

The size-specific formula difference is the deciding fact on this family page. Keeping both declarations visible is more useful than presenting one polished recipe that the evidence does not support across both bags.

  • Dr John Hypoallergenic Duck and Salmon

    Best hypoallergenic recipe

Dr John Hypoallergenic Duck and Salmon

    Why we picked it

Stating exactly what's excluded — wheat and any form of chicken — rather than a vague 'hypoallergenic' claim is the kind of specificity worth stocking a recipe for, since it tells a customer precisely what they're avoiding rather than leaving them to guess. Duck and salmon together is also a less common combination than the chicken-led recipes most of this range leans on.

  • Burgess Sensitive Adult Dog Turkey

    Best value sensitive food

    Burgess Sensitive Adult Dog Turkey

    Why we picked it

Turkey meal at 26% gives the named meat a meaningful place in the recipe. I also value being able to state exactly what sensitive does and does not establish from the supplied label facts.

What “sensitive” can mean

ProblemTryWhen to see the vet
Loose stools on rich foodA simple, single-protein recipeIf it lasts more than a couple of days or there is blood.
Itchy skin and pawsA recipe with a protein the dog has not eaten beforeItching has many causes; a vet should rule out fleas and infection first.
A suspected food allergyAn elimination diet planned by your vetAlways: there is no reliable shop test for it.

“Lamb recipe” on the front does not mean lamb is the only animal protein inside. Check the composition for chicken fat, fish oil, egg or other proteins if you are trying to avoid one.

Hypoallergenic has no legal definition in pet food. Treat it as a description of the recipe’s approach, then judge the actual ingredients.

Food allergy is a vet diagnosis

PDSA notes that food allergies usually show up as skin or stomach problems, and that the fix is a diet with ingredients the dog does not react to, chosen with your vet.

Diagnosis means feeding one diet and nothing else, treats included, for several weeks, then reintroducing foods one at a time. Blood and hair tests sold online are not a reliable way to find a food allergy.

Change slowly, and change one thing

Switch over seven to ten days. If you change food, treats and chews all at once, you will not know which made the difference.

Give a new food a fair trial. Skin can take several weeks to settle, so judge itching over a month or two, not a few days.

Treats count too

A careful diet is undone by a treat full of chicken. Choose treats that match the protein in the main food, or use a few pieces of the dog’s own kibble as rewards.

If your dog has ongoing diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss or skin that is getting worse, see your vet rather than trying food after food.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

What is the best dog food for a sensitive stomach?

A simple recipe with one main protein and a short ingredient list is a good start. Persistent problems need a vet.

Is hypoallergenic dog food the same as grain-free?

No. Hypoallergenic usually means limited or unusual proteins; grain-free means no cereals. A food can be one, both or neither.

How long until a new food helps itchy skin?

Allow several weeks. Skin turns over slowly, so judge it over one to two months, with no other foods given.
