A dull coat is one of the more visible signs that a dog's food isn't quite giving it everything it needs, and it's usually the reason an owner tries a fish-based recipe before anything more drastic — fish oil and fish protein together carry more omega-3 than a typical poultry recipe manages.

Dried fish protein narrowly leads this recipe at 24.8%, just ahead of dried potatoes at 24.1%, with tomato pomace and whole linseed making up the rest. It is a complete grain-free food for adult dogs, and James Wellbeloved's stated approach across the range is to exclude beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat.

• Complete grain-free food for adult dogs, built on fish as the named protein
• Dried fish protein (24.8%) narrowly leads dried potatoes (24.1%)
• Protein 21.0%, fat 10.8%, crude ash 8.1%, crude fibre 3.6%
• Omega-3 at 1.7%
• Glucosamine (0.045%) and chondroitin (0.005%) included
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat

On the joint supplements. Glucosamine and chondroitin are usually the kind of addition you'd expect in a senior recipe, but they're present here in an adult-labelled food too. No harm in that at all — it's simply worth knowing this range doesn't reserve them for older dogs specifically, in case that was part of the decision to buy the senior version instead.

Who it's for: adult dogs on a grain-free fish diet for coat condition or a suspected sensitivity to more common proteins, where the joint additives are a welcome bonus rather than the reason for buying.
