Small dogs burn through energy quickly for their size, which is one reason a dedicated small-breed recipe is usually built rather than simply portioned out of the standard bag — the kibble itself is a different shape as well as a different amount.

Dried turkey protein leads this recipe at 26.5%, ahead of naked oats, and brown and white rice. It is a complete food for adult small-breed dogs, and James Wellbeloved's stated approach across the range is to exclude beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat.

• Complete food for adult small-breed dogs, built on turkey as the named protein
• Dried turkey protein 26.5% leads the recipe
• Protein 25.3%, fat 13.7%, crude ash 8.4%, crude fibre 3.0%
• Omega-3 at 1.1%, omega-6 at 3.4%
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat
• 1.5KG bag

On grain, again. Not every small-breed recipe in James Wellbeloved's range is grain free — this one isn't. It contains naked oats, and brown and white rice, alongside the named turkey. If grain-free specifically is what you want for a small dog, check the front of the bag rather than assuming every small-breed formula matches, because James Wellbeloved sell both kinds.

Who it's for: adult small-breed dogs, not specifically senior ones, whose owner wants a turkey-based kibble sized for a smaller mouth.
