A puppy joining a new home rarely arrives with a full history of what upset the last one, which is one reason breeders and vets keep steering new owners toward a food built on a single animal protein instead of a mixture of several. If something disagrees with a puppy, there is exactly one ingredient to point at rather than a shopping list.

This recipe's protein comes from dried chicken protein, at 30% of the mix, with brown and white rice and naked oats supplying the carbohydrate rather than wheat or soya. It is a complete food, meaning it is formulated to be the whole diet for a growing puppy rather than something added to it, and James Wellbeloved build the recipe to exclude the ingredients most often linked to sensitivities: beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat.

• Complete food for puppies, built on a single named animal protein: chicken
• Protein 30.4%, fat 14.7%, crude fibre 2.2%, crude ash 7.0%
• Calcium 1.5% and phosphorus 1.1%, balanced for a growing skeleton
• Omega-3 at 1.1%, omega-6 at 3.4%
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat
• 2KG bag

One thing worth knowing. This is sold as a single-protein chicken recipe, and chicken is the named animal ingredient doing the work — but the list also carries fish oil, which most James Wellbeloved recipes include for its omega-3. If your puppy has a confirmed fish allergy rather than a general sensitivity, that line matters more than the name on the front of the bag. No feeding table is published on the pages we can read, so use the guide printed on the bag rather than a guess.

Who it's for: owners moving a puppy onto a hypoallergenic diet for the first time, or anyone whose vet has suggested ruling ingredients in or out one at a time rather than switching straight to a mixed-protein food.
