Dry cat food

Senior Cat Food

Little things. Happy cats.

Senior recipes are adjusted for older cats, who usually move less and may eat less. There is no single age when every cat needs one, but most makers start at seven. Choose by your cat’s body shape and appetite, not just their birthday.

Our quick picks

In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

  • James Wellbeloved Senior Dry Cat Food Turkey

    Best senior dry recipe

James Wellbeloved Senior Dry Cat Food Turkey

    Why we picked it

Turkey is not always available in a senior recipe, so it earns its place for cats who have done well on turkey their whole life and should not have to switch protein just because they have gotten older. We would rather say plainly that we cannot confirm the taurine level than leave the question unanswered.

  • Iams Senior Cat Advanced Nutrition Tuna

Iams Senior Cat Advanced Nutrition Tuna

    Why we picked it

Glucosamine isn't standard in every senior cat food, and this one states the exact figure (0.04%) rather than just printing 'joint support' on the front. It's worth checking the composition before buying on the name alone, too — tuna is a minor ingredient here, chicken and turkey do the heavy lifting. Both are things we'd want to know before feeding an older cat.

Purina One Pouches 7+ Senior Cat Mini Fillets in Gravy 40pk

    Why we picked it

Forty pouches in one box means fewer trips back to restock, which matters with a food a cat actually eats reliably. The senior formulation and the mixed flavours in one box are the other reason — it covers an older cat's needs without us having to guess which single flavour they'll tolerate that week.

Matching a senior food to the cat

Watch body shape, not the calendar

Some cats are slowing down at nine; others are running about at fourteen. A senior label is a guide. If an active older cat is keeping a good shape on adult food, there is no rush to switch.

Weigh your cat every month or two. A gradual loss of weight, a change in thirst or a change in appetite are all reasons to book a vet check: in older cats they can be early signs of conditions that are easier to manage when caught early.

Moisture helps older cats

Older cats often drink less than they should. Adding wet food, warming it slightly to bring out the smell, and putting water in several places around the home all help.

A fountain suits cats that prefer running water. Keep bowls away from the litter tray and the food, which many cats prefer.

Make meals easy to eat

Dental problems are common in older cats and can make hard kibble uncomfortable. If your cat drops food, chews on one side or loses interest at the bowl, ask your vet to look at their teeth.

Smaller, more frequent meals suit a cat with a small appetite, and a raised or shallow bowl can be easier for a stiff neck.

Prescription diets come from the vet

A senior food is not a treatment. If your vet diagnoses a condition such as kidney disease, they may recommend a veterinary diet; follow that advice over any general senior recipe.

Change food gradually over a week or so, and do not swap foods often. Older cats can be fussy, and a familiar food they eat well is worth a lot.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

At what age should a cat eat senior food?

Most makers suggest from seven, but judge by your cat’s activity and body shape. A healthy, active older cat can stay on adult food.

Is wet or dry better for older cats?

Both can be complete. Wet food adds moisture, which helps many older cats, so a mix is common.

My older cat is losing weight. Should I change food?

Ask your vet first. Weight loss in an older cat can have a medical cause that a new food will not fix.
