Chinchilla Pellets

A chinchilla's gut is built around near-constant grazing on fibrous plant material, which is why a pelleted feed on its own is never meant to be the whole diet, however complete the bag makes it sound.

Henry Bell's chinchilla pellets are built from wheatfeed, oatfeed, grassmeal, extracted sunflower, barley and soya, with vegetable fat, limestone, salt, dicalcium phosphate and a Verm-X herb blend. It's a complementary feed, meant to sit alongside unlimited good-quality hay as the main source of fibre, plus a small daily amount of fresh greens and vegetables and clean water. It analyses at 17% crude protein, 14.5% crude fibre, 4.4% fat and 7.6% ash.

On what this replaces. This is not a substitute for hay — Henry Bell's own guidance is that it's a complementary feed, fed alongside unlimited hay plus a small daily amount of fresh greens and vegetables. A chinchilla fed on pellets alone isn't getting the fibre its gut is built for.
