Flea and worm treatments come in a few different forms — spot-on liquid applied to the skin, tablets, and collars that release an active ingredient over weeks or months. Which type suits your dog or cat depends more on how easy they are to treat and how consistently you want to apply something than on any one product being universally best.

Spot-on, tablets or a collar

Spot-on treatments are applied to the skin, usually at the back of the neck where a pet can't lick it off, and typically last around a month. They're straightforward for most dogs and cats, though a very determined groomer can sometimes reduce how well one works if it's applied wrong or licked soon after.

Tablets suit a pet who takes them easily in food, and some owners prefer knowing exactly how much has gone in rather than trusting a liquid has been fully absorbed. Collars work continuously over a longer period, which suits an owner who wants to think about it less often, though fit and rewetting can affect how well they work.

Why regularity matters more than the product

Fleas and worms are an ongoing risk, not a one-off problem to solve — a treatment that worked well last time doesn't protect a pet indefinitely, since re-exposure happens constantly through other animals, gardens and shared spaces. A missed month is usually where a flea problem gets a foothold.

Cats and dogs in the same household are often treated on the same rough schedule for exactly this reason — fleas move between pets that share a home, so treating one and not the other tends to just push the problem sideways rather than solve it.

Choosing the right product for the animal

Products made for dogs and products made for cats are not interchangeable, even at what looks like the equivalent size or dose — some ingredients that are safe for dogs are genuinely dangerous for cats. Always check the packaging is specifically for the species you're treating.

Some products are general sale and available over the counter, while others are only available through a vet or pharmacist because of what's in them. If a product you're looking for isn't something we can supply, that's usually why, and it's worth asking your vet directly about the options for your pet.
