Collars are sized by the neck girth — the measurement around the base of the neck where the collar will sit.

How to measure

Wrap a soft tape around the base of the neck.
Add room for two fingers between the tape and the neck.
Use that measurement to pick a size whose range it falls within.

Almost everybody buys a flea product in the week they find a flea, which is several weeks after the useful moment. Beaphar's own instruction for this collar reads the other way round: fit it early in the season, before anything has been seen, and at least a week before your dog is likely to meet a tick.

The collar is the delivery mechanism rather than just the carrier. Deltamethrin sits in the polymer matrix the collar is made from and is released out of it slowly, which is why the cover is measured in months rather than in applications. The three durations are not the same: Beaphar state fleas killed for up to 16 weeks, ticks for up to 6 months and sandflies for up to 5.5 months. It is cleared for dogs from 7 weeks of age. The sandfly figure is the one that gets this collar bought by name, because sandflies are how leishmaniasis is passed to dogs abroad.
