A two-day-old kitten is old enough for almost nothing. Nearly everything in a pet shop that kills a parasite carries a minimum age measured in weeks or months, which is a real problem when a litter arrives already carrying fleas and the mother is carrying them too. That gap — the first few weeks, when the animals are smallest and least able to cope with an infestation — is the reason a spray still exists in a world of spot-ons.

The active ingredient is fipronil, and Beaphar describe this as a veterinary strength medicine for fleas, ticks and biting lice on kittens, puppies, cats and dogs. Their published figures differ by parasite and by species: ticks killed for up to one month on both cats and dogs, adult fleas for up to two months on cats and three months on dogs. It is cleared for use from two days of age. Beaphar recommend it for cats and dogs weighing no more than 10kg — not because it stops working above that, but because of how many sprays a larger animal takes to cover.

How long does one application keep working?
