Cat Caves & Igloo Beds

Cats are both predator and prey, and a sleeping cat is at its most vulnerable. The drive to tuck into a covered, defensible spot — under the bed, inside a box, behind the sofa — is pure self-preservation. An igloo or cave bed gives that enclosed security as a permanent fixture, with a single opening to watch from and solid walls at their back.

For nervous, rehomed or multi-cat households this matters even more. A cave offers a retreat from a boisterous dog, visiting children or a more dominant housemate, and having somewhere genuinely safe to withdraw to lowers everyday stress. Cats that hover anxiously in the open often relax completely once they have a roof of their own.

Materials shape the feel. Felted wool caves are firm, breathable and naturally insulating, holding their domed shape well and wicking moisture — a good all-rounder. Plush and faux-fur caves are softer and snugglier, ideal for warmth-loving cats in cooler homes, though they squash flatter and need more frequent washing. Check care instructions, as solid wool caves usually need gentle hand washing.

Placement makes or breaks a cave bed. Set it somewhere quiet, slightly raised if you can, and away from busy thoroughfares and the food bowl. Don’t reach in and haul your cat out — the whole point is that it’s their inviolable space. Let them discover it, perhaps with a familiar blanket inside, and they’ll claim it on their own terms.
