Calming products work by either mimicking natural reassurance signals — like the pheromone a mother dog or cat releases around her young — or through ingredients associated with a mild calming effect. They can genuinely take the edge off situational stress, but they're rarely a complete fix for a deeper behavioural or anxiety problem on their own.
How pheromone products work
Pheromone collars, diffusers and sprays release a synthetic version of a calming signal pets naturally produce and respond to, most commonly used around fireworks, travel, vet visits or a change in the household. They work gradually rather than instantly, and are generally more effective as a background support than a one-off fix for an acute panic moment.
Consistency matters — a diffuser needs to run continuously in the room your pet spends time in to build up the effect, and a collar needs proper skin contact to release its pheromone effectively.
Calming beds, blankets and supplements
A weighted or bubble-plush calming blanket works on the same principle as a swaddle, giving a mild, constant pressure that some anxious pets find genuinely reassuring, particularly during something predictable like a thunderstorm.
Calming supplements, often based on ingredients like tryptophan or specific herbal extracts, are generally aimed at everyday, low-level stress rather than a serious anxiety condition. They're not a substitute for addressing what's actually causing the stress in the first place.
Knowing when it's more than a product can help
A pet who is destructive when left alone, toileting indoors despite being house-trained, or showing signs of genuine panic — pacing, drooling, trying to escape — needs more than a calming spray. That pattern is worth discussing with your vet, who can assess whether there's an underlying anxiety condition that needs a proper behavioural or medical plan.
Calming products work well for situational, lower-level stress — a car journey, a firework night, a new visitor — and as a support alongside proper behavioural work for anything more serious, not instead of it.
About calming & anxiety
Calming products manage the edges of a problem; they do not resolve it. Pheromone diffusers, snug wraps, licking mats and covered beds all help a dog or cat cope with a specific, time-limited stress — fireworks night, a house move, a party — and they work best alongside a quiet room, drawn curtains and something absorbing to do.
Fireworks are the predictable one, so prepare before the week itself: a den somewhere internal, background noise, and a pheromone diffuser plugged in a couple of weeks ahead rather than on the night, since they take time to build up.
Ongoing anxiety is different. Separation distress, sudden behaviour changes, or a pet who is frightened most days need a vet and, usually, a qualified behaviourist — the vet first, because pain is a common and easily missed cause of a change in temperament. Nothing on this page is a substitute for that.

Common questions
How can I prepare my pet for fireworks night?
Set up a cosy hideaway in advance, close curtains and play steady background sound, and have calming aids in place a few days beforehand so they are not new on the night.
Do calming wraps and diffusers really help?
Many owners find gentle constant pressure and calming scents take the edge off mild anxiety, though results vary by pet — they work best alongside training and a calm environment.
When should I speak to a vet?
If your pet shows severe panic, is hurting themselves, or anxiety is affecting daily life, talk to your vet, as they can rule out pain and discuss behaviour support or medication.
