Kitten Food

Good things come together.

A kitten grows faster in its first year than at any time afterwards, and kitten food is made for that growth. Choose a complete kitten recipe, split the day’s allowance into several small meals, and stay with kitten food until your cat is around a year old.

Our quick picks

In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

  • James Wellbeloved Kitten Dry Cat Food Fish

    Best fish-based dry kitten food

James Wellbeloved Kitten Dry Cat Food Fish

    Why we picked it

A genuinely single-protein kitten food is less common than it sounds — most "fish" recipes for kittens still carry a second animal protein for palatability, and this one does not. Starting a kitten on a simpler ingredient list from the beginning also makes it easier to spot a reaction later, because there is less to rule out.

  • Purina One Kitten Chicken

    Best chicken dry kitten food

    Purina One Kitten Chicken

    Why we picked it

Protein at 41% is genuinely high, which fits what a growing kitten needs more than an adult formula would. The feeding table is also broken into three separate age bands rather than one, which is more useful in practice.

  • Burgess Kitten Chicken

    Best value kitten recipe

    Burgess Kitten Chicken

    Why we picked it

Complete status is the deciding point for a kitten's main food, and this recipe pairs it with a declared 25% chicken content. The pack-size choice also lets owners buy for their own storage and feeding routine.

A little guidance

Feeding a kitten by age

AgeFeedingWhy
8 to 12 weeksFour small meals a dayA kitten’s stomach is tiny, so it needs little and often.
3 to 6 monthsThree to four meals a dayGrowth is still rapid and appetite is high.
6 to 12 monthsTwo to three meals a dayGrowth slows, so the portion per kilogram goes down too.

Keep the food they came home on, at first

Moving home is stressful enough. Feed whatever the breeder or rescue was using for the first week or two, then change gradually over seven to ten days if you want to switch.

A sudden change of food is one of the commonest reasons a new kitten gets an upset stomach. If loose stools last more than a day or two, or the kitten seems unwell, call your vet.

Wet, dry or both

Complete wet and dry kitten foods both cover a kitten’s needs. Many owners use both: wet for moisture and interest, dry for convenience and for a measured amount the kitten can graze on.

Fresh water should always be available. Cow’s milk is not needed and often upsets a kitten’s stomach; a specially made cat milk is a treat, not a drink.

Portion for the kitten in front of you

Pack guides list amounts by age and weight. Weigh your kitten every couple of weeks and adjust, aiming for a kitten whose ribs you can feel but not see.

PDSA warns that kittens who become overweight young are more likely to struggle with weight later. A kitten that seems hungry all the time may simply need its daily amount split into more meals.

When to move to adult food

Most cats move to adult food at about twelve months. Large, slow-maturing breeds such as Maine Coons may stay on kitten food for longer, and many makers give breed guidance on the pack.

Neutering lowers a cat’s energy needs, so keep an eye on body shape in the weeks after the operation and cut portions if the kitten starts to fill out.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

How long should a kitten eat kitten food?

Until around twelve months, and sometimes longer for large breeds. Check the pack for breed guidance.

How many times a day should I feed a kitten?

Four small meals at eight to twelve weeks, dropping to two or three by six months to a year.

Can kittens eat adult cat food?

Kitten food suits them better, because it is made for growth. A few mouthfuls of adult food do no harm.
