A kitten's digestive system is still working things out, which is why so much kitten food leans toward fewer ingredients rather than more — a simpler recipe gives a young cat's gut less to go wrong on while it is still developing.

James Wellbeloved build this one around a single animal protein, dried fish (21%), with white and brown rice for carbohydrate and fish oil and fish stock reinforcing the theme rather than introducing a second protein. It excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat, the same allergen list the brand applies across its range.

• Single animal protein: dried fish (21%)
• Protein 33.7%, fat content 20.1%, crude ash 8.6%, crude fibre 1.5%
• Calcium 1.6%, phosphorus 1.1%, omega-3 1.4%, omega-6 4.0%
• Energy 414 kcal/100g
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat
• 1.5KG bag

What the label does not say. No specific feeding table by kitten age or weight is given on this card — James Wellbeloved's guidance sits on the pack itself, and a kitten's needs change quickly enough over its first year that a printed guide is worth checking regularly rather than fixing a portion once and leaving it.

Who it's for: owners of a growing kitten who want a single-protein, allergen-excluded diet from the outset, particularly where there's a family history of food sensitivity in that cat's littermates or parents.
