A kitten's digestive system is still working out what it can handle, which is why so many end up with an upset stomach the first time they are switched onto an adult food too early. The ingredients are not necessarily wrong; the timing is.

This is James Wellbeloved's kitten recipe, built around turkey as the single named protein at 26% dried turkey protein, with white and brown rice for carbohydrate rather than wheat. It excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat, the same hypoallergenic approach the brand uses across its adult range.

• Composition: dried turkey protein (26%), white rice (21%), brown rice (8.9%)
• Protein 21.2%, fat 12.0%, crude ash 7.9%, crude fibre 3.0%
• Omega-3 1.1%, omega-6 2.5%
• Formulated for growing kittens
• Excludes beef, pork, soya, eggs, dairy and wheat
• 1.5kg bag

On moving to adult food. No timeline for switching a kitten onto an adult recipe has been supplied to us, and it is not something to guess at, ages vary by breed and by cat. Ask your vet when to make the change rather than working from a date on a calendar.

Who it's for: owners of a kitten who want a single-protein turkey recipe from the start, particularly if an older cat in the house already eats turkey and you would rather not run two different proteins in the same kitchen.
