Cat Litter

Tidy home. Happy cat.

The right litter is the one your cat will use and you can live with. Clumping litter makes daily scooping easy, wood pellets are light and absorbent, recycled paper is low in dust, and plant-based litters are a lighter bag to carry home.

Our quick picks

In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

  • Catit Pea Husk Unscented Clumping Cat Litter

    Best plant-based clumping litter

Catit Pea Husk Unscented Clumping Cat Litter

    Why we picked it

Unscented is the harder one to find and it is the one people come back for, because a perfumed litter is the quickest way to make a cat decide against a tray. Pea husk also makes the bag bearable to carry up a flight of stairs, which matters more in practice than any of the marketing does. Most plant litters on this shelf arrive scented and this one does not.

  • Pampuss Wood Pellet Cat Litter

    Best wood pellet litter

    Pampuss Wood Pellet Cat Litter

    Why we picked it

Recycled wood residue is a genuinely more sustainable base than mined clay, and a litter that breaks down into sawdust as it's used is simply easier to deal with at bin day. It's a straightforward, honestly described product rather than one dressed up with claims we can't back.

  • Breeder Celect Recycled Paper Cat Litter

    Best low-dust paper litter

Breeder Celect Recycled Paper Cat Litter

    Why we picked it

At 25 litres this is the size where the cost per tray-full starts to make sense, and unlike most sacks that big it has handles and a pour spout so you can actually use it. Recycled paper made in the UK with nothing added is the whole reason people ask for this brand. Just know going in that it is not a clumping litter.

Cats choose the litter, not us

Many cats prefer a fine, soft, unscented litter. Strong perfumes that please people can put cats off the tray entirely. If you change litter, mix the new one into the old over a week or so.

The RSPCA suggests a few centimetres of litter, a tray big enough to turn round in, and one tray per cat plus one more, placed somewhere quiet.

Scoop daily, change weekly

Remove clumps and solids every day and top up the litter. Empty and wash the whole tray at least weekly with hot water or a cat-safe cleaner; bleach and strong disinfectants leave a smell cats avoid.

A cat that suddenly starts going outside the tray may be unwell or stressed. Speak to your vet before blaming the litter.

Pregnancy and hygiene

The NHS advises pregnant women to avoid emptying litter trays where possible, because of the small risk of toxoplasmosis. If you have to do it, wear gloves, clean the tray daily and wash your hands afterwards.

Everyone should wash their hands after handling litter. Keep the tray away from where food is prepared.

Compare bags by how long they last

A light litter that lasts longer can work out cheaper than a heavy bag at a lower price per kilogram. Clumping litter usually needs less replacing because you only remove what is soiled.

Weight matters if you carry litter upstairs or have it delivered: wood and plant-based litters are much lighter for the same volume than clay.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

What cat litter is best for odour?

Clumping litters are easiest to keep fresh because you remove the wet patch every day. Daily scooping matters more than any fragrance.

How often should I change cat litter?

Scoop every day and replace all the litter, washing the tray, at least once a week.

Can I flush cat litter?

Only if the pack says it is flushable, and never clay litter. Follow the maker’s disposal advice.
