Specifications

Brand: Kittyfriend

Full description

Litter tray smell is mostly a bacteria problem rather than a moisture one, which is why some litters are treated specifically to slow bacterial growth rather than simply absorbing more liquid.

Kittyfriend Antibacterial is made from sepiolite, a natural mineral, with blue granules treated with a bactericide. Kittyfriend describe the bactericide as working by inhibiting bacterial growth directly, which is the mechanism behind the odour control rather than absorbency alone. It's a non-clumping litter, so solids are scooped out rather than lifted as clumps.

One thing worth knowing. Kittyfriend don't publish an absorbency figure or a recommended fill depth for this litter on the card, so beyond "non-clumping" and "antibacterial," there isn't a number here to compare it against a rival litter on paper.

Who it's for: owners more concerned with tray odour than with clump-and-scoop convenience, who want a non-clumping mineral litter with an antibacterial treatment built in.

Why we chose it

Antibacterial treatment aimed specifically at the smell-causing bacteria, rather than just piling on fragrance, is the more sensible way to deal with litter tray odour. Sepiolite as the base keeps it in familiar territory for anyone who already runs a mineral litter.
