Dog Harnesses
The right harness fits the dog and the job: light mesh for ordinary walks, a front clip for pulling, a third strap for escape risk or a crash-tested design for the car. Start with chest measurement, then choose the control you actually need.

Best for strong pullers
Company of Animals Halti No Pull Harness
Why we picked it
The combination of lifting action and front steering gives you two ways to manage a puller rather than betting everything on one mechanism, and it works for flat-nosed breeds that a headcollar simply doesn't suit. It's designed to pair with the Halti Training Lead, but it's a genuine harness on its own if that's all you need.

Best breathable everyday harness
Ancol Comfort Mesh Harness
Why we picked it
Mesh actually breathes, which a lot of harnesses marketed as 'breathable' don't manage in practice. It's also machine washable, which matters once it's been out in the rain a few times.

Best crash-tested travel harness
Company of Animals Carsafe Crash Tested Harness
Why we picked it
Crash tested is the claim that actually matters here, not just 'car harness' — plenty of harnesses clip to a seatbelt without ever having been tested to hold in an impact. That it also works as a walking harness means it isn't dead weight sitting in the car between journeys.

Choose a harness by the problem it solves
| Need | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Comfortable everyday walks | Padded mesh back-clip harness | It spreads pressure and keeps the fastening simple. |
| A dog that pulls | Front-clip or dual-clip harness | The front attachment turns the chest rather than letting the dog drive straight ahead. |
| A dog that reverses out | Three-strap escape-resistant harness | The rear strap sits behind the ribcage and closes the usual escape route. |
| Car travel and walking | Crash-tested travel harness | A tested restraint does a different job from a walking harness that merely has a seatbelt loop. |
Measure the chest while the dog is standing
Wrap the tape around the deepest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs, and use the individual product chart. A breed label or collar size cannot tell you the chest fit.
You should be able to slide two fingers under each strap. Check behind the elbows after the first few walks: movement reveals rubbing that is easy to miss indoors.
Control equipment supports training
A front clip changes the mechanics of a pull and a handle gives close control at a junction. Neither teaches loose-lead walking on its own. Rewarding a slack lead is still what changes the habit.
For a known escape artist, use the purpose-built third strap and introduce the fit at home. A nervous dog needs secure equipment and gradual confidence work, not tighter straps around an ordinary harness.
Choose the attachment point for the walk
A back clip is simple for a dog that already walks without towing. Front clips can add steering for pulling, while a dual-clip design lets you change the setup as training progresses. Check that a front lead does not cross the legs when it goes slack.
Handles are useful for brief close control, not for lifting a dog. Reflective panels improve visibility but do not replace a light when walking beside traffic after dark.
Walking and car harnesses are not the same
A walking harness is designed for comfort and lead control. A car harness needs its own restraint instructions, compatible attachment and evidence of testing; a loop that accepts a seatbelt does not by itself prove crash performance.
Recheck every buckle before travel and follow the maker’s route for the belt or tether. If one harness claims to do both jobs, judge the travel evidence first and the walking fit second.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
Which dog harness is best for pulling?
A front-clip or dual-clip harness gives useful steering and works best alongside reward-based loose-lead training.
How tight should a dog harness be?
Snug enough that the dog cannot reverse out, with room for two fingers under each strap and no rubbing behind the front legs.
Can a walking harness be used in the car?
Only when the manufacturer specifically states it is suitable and explains how to restrain it. For collision protection, choose a crash-tested car harness.
