Putting anything over a puppy's head is a negotiation, and it is one you lose more often than you win. Some dogs never get comfortable with it at all: the head goes down, the ears go back, and every single walk starts with a small argument before anybody has reached the front door.

A step-in harness removes that from the process entirely - the dog stands into it and it fastens on the back - and that is the design decision this one is built around. Ancol aim it specifically at head-shy dogs and at puppies still learning what a harness is. The rest of it is a comfort-fit shape in breathable mesh, in the teddy-bear fabric the range takes its name from, with a reflective strip worked in for low-light walks. It sits in Ancol's Small Bite range, which is their line designed around small dogs rather than scaled down from large ones.

• Step-in design, so nothing goes over the dog's head
• Comfort-fit shape in breathable mesh
• Reflective strip for visibility on low-light walks
• Part of Ancol's Small Bite range, for puppies and small dogs
• Rose colourway

No girth measurements have been published, and the two sizes share a name. That is an awkward combination on a harness, because chest girth is the only number that actually decides fit, and there is nothing here to check your dog against. Worse, the size options are listed under identical product names, so they cannot be told apart from the listing itself - measure around the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and ask us to confirm which size a code refers to before you order rather than after. There is no washing instruction supplied either, and mesh with a reflective strip bonded to it is not something to put through a hot wash on a guess.

Who it's for: owners of a puppy or small dog that objects to anything coming over its head, and anyone starting harness training who wants the fitting to be the easy part of the walk rather than the hard part.
