Putting a harness over a puppy's head is where a lot of puppies decide, once and for all, that they do not like harnesses. Everything after that is negotiation. A step-in avoids the argument entirely, which is why they exist.

This one is built for puppies and small dogs: the dog stands in it and it fastens on the back, so nothing goes near the head. The outer is a teddy fabric with breathable mesh through it, and Ancol give it a comfort-fit shape rather than a flat webbing cut, so the load sits across the chest. There is a reflective strip on it for walks in the dark, which on a small dog low to the ground is worth more than it is on a tall one. This page covers the two smallest sizes.

• Step-in design, so nothing passes over the dog's head
• Teddy fabric with breathable mesh
• Reflective strip for low-light walks
• Comfort-fit shape rather than flat webbing
• Made for puppies and small dogs
• Two sizes on this page, XXSML and XSML

On sizing: this is the part Ancol have not given us. There is no neck measurement, no chest or girth range and no weight guidance against either XXS or XS in anything supplied with this product, and extra small means different things on different brands. Measure your dog around the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and check that figure against Ancol's own chart before ordering rather than guessing from the label. No washing instruction has been supplied either, which on a teddy fabric is something you would rather know before the first muddy walk than after it.

Who it's for: puppies in early lead training, small adult dogs, and particularly head-shy dogs who have already made their feelings clear about anything going over their ears.
