Why we chose it

A step-in is the harness to buy for a puppy who has already decided about things going over their head, and there is very little at this price that does it. Teddy fabric is soft on a dog that has not grown a proper coat yet. We keep the two smallest sizes because that is where step-in harnesses are actually needed.

Size guide & how to measure

Harnesses are sized by the chest (girth) — the measurement around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.

How to measure

Stand your pet up squarely.
Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
Keep two fingers under the tape so the fit is snug, not tight.
If your pet is between sizes, choose the larger one.

Putting a harness over a puppy's head is where a lot of puppies decide, once and for all, that they do not like harnesses. Everything after that is negotiation. A step-in avoids the argument entirely, which is why they exist.

This one is built for puppies and small dogs: the dog stands in it and it fastens on the back, so nothing goes near the head. The outer is a teddy fabric with breathable mesh through it, and Ancol give it a comfort-fit shape rather than a flat webbing cut, so the load sits across the chest. There is a reflective strip on it for walks in the dark, which on a small dog low to the ground is worth more than it is on a tall one. This page covers the two smallest sizes.
