Cats and small dogs share a problem: both need the pull taken off the neck, and both are quick to reverse out of anything loose. A wide, well-fitted vest harness answers each of those in a way a collar cannot. This set pairs a padded faux-leather harness with a matching lead, so the two parts are designed to work together rather than assembled from whatever happened to be in the drawer by the door.

The harness sits across the chest and behind the front legs, spreading load over a broad area instead of concentrating it at the throat. Quick-release buckles let you take it off without lifting the whole thing over an unhappy cat's head, and the gold-tone hardware keeps it looking smart rather than sporty. It comes in pink, blue, apricot, brown, green and black, and you can buy the harness on its own, the lead on its own, or the pair together as a set.

• Padded faux-leather harness with matching lead
• Quick-release buckles and gold-tone hardware
• Spreads pressure across the chest, not the neck
• Pink, blue, apricot, brown, green and black
• Sold as harness only, lead only, or full set
• Sized for small dogs and cats

On fitting: measure the chest girth just behind the front legs. That is the measurement a harness is sized by, not the neck and certainly not the weight. Once it is on, you should be able to slip two fingers flat under any strap and no more. Cats escape from anything looser than that, so check the fit indoors before the first trip outside.

Who it's for: Owners of small dogs or harness-trained cats who want one tidy, comfortable set rather than mismatched parts.
