Dog Mattresses & Crate Mats
A flat mattress gives a stretched-out sleeper the whole surface instead of losing space to high sides. It also fits neatly inside a crate, under a favourite blanket or in a car boot where a bulky bolster bed will not.
Our quick picks
In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

Best washable crate mattress
Bestpets Fleece Mattress Star
Why we picked it
It earns its place for being genuinely multi-purpose. Carrier, crate or floor bed, all with the same washable mattress, is the cheapest way to cover all three without buying three separate beds.

Best non-slip fleece mattress
Vetbed Non Slip Paw
Why we picked it
The backing is the reason to pay for this rather than a fleece blanket. A blanket costs less and slides about; this stays where the dog puts it and goes in the machine afterwards. It also packs flat, which keeps the postage sensible on something this bulky.

Best for dogs that stretch out
Plush Ribbed Mattress Dog Bed
Why we picked it
Dogs who sleep stretched out are badly served by round beds. A collie flat on their side needs length, not walls. This is a bolster-free mattress in three sizes, and a labrador who sprawls will want every centimetre of the largest.

Which flat dog bed should you choose?
| Where it goes | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Inside a crate | Washable mat matched to the internal floor | It lies flat without bunching against the door or divider. |
| On laminate or tiles | Non-slip backed mattress | The bed stays still when the dog steps on or rises from it. |
| For a sprawled sleeper | Full rectangular mattress | The dog can use the complete length without a bolster taking up space. |
| For a stiff or older dog | Supportive foam with a removable cover | Stable cushioning is easier to rise from and simpler to keep clean. |
Measure the usable sleeping area
Measure the dog lying fully on one side from nose to tail base, then add about fifteen to twenty centimetres. For a crate, compare that with the crate’s internal floor—not its external dimensions.
A decorative edge or rounded corner can reduce the space shown in the headline measurement. Flat rectangular products make the usable area easiest to judge.
A fleece mat and an orthopaedic mattress do different jobs
Fleece bedding is washable, quick-drying and easy to fit into a crate or car. It adds warmth and grip, but a thin mat does not provide the structured pressure relief of supportive foam.
For a heavy, older or arthritic dog, choose enough thickness that elbows and hips do not compress straight through to the floor. A removable washable cover matters because the most supportive filling is rarely the easiest part to wash.
Check the cover before the filling
A removable zipped cover is easier to wash than a one-piece stuffed mattress, especially after muddy walks or accidents. Look for a protected zip, clear wash temperature and a spare-cover option if the bed is used every night.
Water-resistant and waterproof are different claims. A water-resistant outer buys time for wiping spills; an impermeable liner is what protects foam from soaking through.
Crate mats must lie flat and stay cool enough
Measure around dividers, door catches and any raised tray lip so the mat does not bunch or block the entrance. A non-slip base helps on a plastic tray, but it still needs checking after the dog turns or digs at the bedding.
Choose warmth for the room rather than assuming thicker is always better. Dogs that overheat or chew bedding may need a simpler, closely supervised setup, while older dogs often benefit from deeper cushioning and easy access.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
Common questions
What size dog mattress should I buy?
Measure the dog fully stretched and add roughly fifteen to twenty centimetres. For crates, use the internal floor measurements.
Is Vetbed an orthopaedic mattress?
No. It is warm, washable fleece bedding with useful grip, but it does not replace a supportive foam bed for a dog needing joint pressure relief.
Are flat beds better than bolster beds?
They suit dogs that stretch out and spaces such as crates or car boots. A curled sleeper may prefer the enclosed edge of a bolster bed.
