Komodo reptile care

Komodo covers the everyday running of a reptile enclosure rather than any one product — substrate to line it, food for tortoises, and heating to keep the whole thing at the right temperature. We stock a wide slice of the range, which is broad enough that most vivarium set-ups can be put together from it alone.

Substrates and terrain

The range includes several substrate types — coconut, straw, beech chips, aspen and moss among them — and which one suits your enclosure depends more on the species inside it than personal preference. Species that burrow or need humidity generally do better on coconut or moss, while drier setups often use straw or beech chips.

Compact terrain bricks are a concentrated version of the coconut substrate, sold dry and expanded with water before use, which is a practical way to buy and store a large volume of substrate without the bulk. Check what your particular reptile needs before choosing, since the wrong substrate for a species can be more of a welfare issue than a cosmetic one.

Tortoise food and supplements

Komodo's tortoise food range covers several flavours — banana, cucumber, dandelion and mixed salad among them — sold as a way to vary a tortoise's diet rather than as a single complete food to feed exclusively. A calcium supplement for herbivores sits alongside it, aimed at species that need extra calcium beyond what fresh food alone provides.

Fresh, varied plant matter should still make up the bulk of a tortoise's diet where your species allows it, with a prepared food and supplement used to fill genuine gaps rather than replace fresh feeding altogether. If you are not sure what your tortoise's species needs, a reptile-experienced vet or a specialist reptile keeper's guide is a better source than guesswork.

Heating

A ceramic heat lamp and bracket, and the heat mats in the range, are built to maintain the background temperature a reptile enclosure needs rather than to provide the basking spot itself — those are usually two separate jobs done by two different products. Always run heating equipment through its own thermostat rather than leaving it unregulated.

Getting the temperature gradient right across the enclosure matters more for most reptiles than any single product choice, so it is worth checking the specific range your species needs and confirming actual temperatures with a thermometer rather than relying on a heater's stated wattage alone.
