Buying guide
The best setup is the one your cat can reach, use comfortably and accept consistently.
Some cats appreciate the privacy of a covered tray; others prefer an open view and an easy exit. Look for generous internal space, not just compact outside dimensions.
Cats Protection advises removing a swinging flap if it discourages your cat or traps odour inside. If you are changing styles, offering the old and new trays side by side lets your cat show a preference.
A hood can keep odour out of the room while concentrating it inside the tray, so covered designs may need more frequent cleaning. Check how easily the top lifts away and whether replacement filters are readily available.
There is no single style that suits every cat. Some prefer the extra privacy; others can feel too enclosed. Space, access, cleanliness and location matter alongside the hood itself.
If the flap taps your cat or seems to put them off, remove it. An open doorway still provides much of the screening of a hood while making entry and exit clearer.
