The best setup is the one your cat can reach, use comfortably and accept consistently.
Start with the dimensions: your cat should have room to enter, turn and dig comfortably. A lower entrance can make access easier for kittens, older cats and cats with reduced mobility.
Open trays make it easy to see when waste needs removing. Higher sides can help with litter scatter, provided your cat can still get in comfortably.
Put trays in quiet, accessible places away from food, water and busy walkways. In a multi-cat home, the usual guidance is one tray per cat plus one extra, positioned separately rather than all in one row.
Many cats use an open tray happily, but preferences vary. If your cat avoids a new tray, compare another shape or style and make sure the location, litter and cleanliness have not changed at the same time.
