The rim comes off. That is a small piece of design that changes the worst job of the week: instead of tipping a deep tray with high walls into a bin and trying not to spill it down yourself, you unclip the surround and empty a plain, open tray. Anyone who has wrestled a full hooded box will recognise why that matters.

While it is on, the rim stands 13cm high and does the usual work of stopping an enthusiastic digger redecorating the floor. The tray itself is stainless steel, which does not scratch into a surface that traps urine — the reason plastic trays start to smell after a year no matter how thoroughly they are cleaned.
