The front-in, top-out layout is not a gimmick. A cat leaving through a raised top opening has to lift and step, and that movement shakes granules off their paws while they are still over the tray rather than three feet into your hallway. If litter tracking is the thing that irritates you most, this design does more about it than any mat.

The top exit does not suit every cat. Older cats, cats with arthritis or stiff hips, and very young kittens may find climbing out awkward — and a cat who finds the exit difficult will simply go elsewhere.
