Nylon dog leads
Nylon is the most common dog lead material for good reason: it's light, doesn't need breaking in, dries quickly after a wet walk, and comes in far more colours and prints than leather ever will. A padded handle version is worth the small extra cost for anyone walking a dog that pulls, or walking for long stretches at a time.
Nylon versus leather and rope
Leather leads soften and mould to your hand over time but need occasional conditioning and don't take well to being left out in the rain. Nylon needs none of that upkeep, is machine washable in most cases, and is generally the cheaper option for a lead you're not precious about.
Rope leads sit somewhere between the two — often thicker and more comfortable to grip than plain nylon webbing, but usually heavier and less packable. For most everyday walking, a good nylon lead does the job without asking anything of you in return.
Picking a length and fit
A standard length around 1.2 metres suits most everyday walking and gives enough slack without being a trip hazard. Longer training leads, covered separately, are a different tool for a different job — recall practice and controlled freedom rather than a lead for a normal walk on a busy path.
A padded handle is worth choosing if your dog pulls at all, since a plain nylon strap can dig into your hand uncomfortably over a longer walk. Check the clip strength matches your dog's size and pulling power — a lightweight clip on a strong, determined dog is a false economy.

Common questions
- Is nylon or leather better for a dog lead?
- Neither is objectively better — leather feels nicer in the hand once broken in and ages well, while nylon is lighter, cheaper, dries faster and needs no maintenance. For a lead that gets used daily in all weathers, nylon's practicality tends to win out for most owners.
- What lead length should I get for everyday walks?
- Around 1.2 metres is the standard length for everyday walking and suits most dogs and most situations, giving enough room to move without excess lead trailing or tangling. A longer lead is better suited to specific training exercises than to a normal walk on a lead.
- Are padded handles worth the extra cost?
- If your dog pulls at all, yes — a padded handle spreads the pressure across your palm rather than digging in with a thin strap, which makes a real difference on a longer walk. For a dog that walks calmly on a loose lead, it's more of a comfort preference than a necessity.
