When a chain lead makes sense
The main reason to choose a chain lead over fabric, leather or rope is a dog who chews or grabs the lead during walks — a habit that quickly wears through most other materials but does very little to a metal chain. It is a practical fix for that specific problem rather than a lead most owners would choose for everyday comfort.
Chain leads are also, by their nature, heavier and less flexible in the hand than a fabric or rope lead, which some owners do not mind and others find genuinely uncomfortable over a long walk. If chewing is not an issue for your dog, a padded fabric or leather lead is usually the more comfortable everyday choice.
Choosing the right weight and using it comfortably
Match the weight to the dog: a heavy chain suits a larger, stronger dog, while an extra-heavy chain is aimed at dogs who need the most durable option available, whether that is size, strength or a particularly determined chewer. Too heavy a chain for a small dog is uncomfortable for the dog and clumsy for the person holding it.
A padded handle, where the lead has one, makes a real difference to comfort, since bare chain can dig into the hand over a longer walk. If your dog chews the lead out of anxiety or frustration rather than habit, it is worth thinking about what is driving that behaviour alongside choosing a more chew-resistant lead.
