Full description
A chain lead exists for one reason: some dogs go through a fabric lead faster than an owner can replace it, and steel doesn't fray, chew through or stretch the way rope or webbing can.
Ancol's Heritage Extra Heavy Chain Lead pairs a chrome-plated welded steel chain with a handle made from bridle leather, which the brand says is chosen to be supple as well as strong. A trigger hook at the end attaches to a collar, and the lead is made by Ancol's own workforce in the UK. This page covers the lead in black and tan.
- Chrome-plated welded steel chain
- Bridle leather handle
- Trigger hook fastening
- Made in the UK
- Available in black or tan
On the leather. Bridle leather softens and marks with use the way any leather item does, and Ancol don't publish a weight limit or chain gauge for this lead, so match it to your dog's size by eye rather than by a printed rating.
Who it's for: owners of dogs that go through fabric leads too quickly, who want a chain lead with a leather handle rather than a bare metal one that's uncomfortable to hold.

Why we chose it
A chain lead only earns its price if the handle is actually comfortable to hold for a full walk, and a bridle leather handle is the difference between this and a cheap all-metal version that cuts into your hand. Being made in the UK is also worth something on a product this simple to get wrong.
