Retractable dog leads
A retractable lead lets a dog range further from you than a standard fixed lead, reeling out and in from a handheld case as they move, with a button to lock the length or bring them back in. They suit some situations well and others poorly, so it's worth knowing which is which before choosing one as your everyday lead.
Where retractable leads work well
Open, quiet spaces — a big field, a beach, a park with plenty of room — are where a retractable lead earns its keep, giving a well-behaved dog more freedom to sniff and explore than a fixed-length lead allows, while you keep overall control through the lock button.
They suit dogs who already walk reasonably well on a lead and don't lunge hard at other dogs, people or traffic, since the extending mechanism gives less immediate control than a short, fixed lead in a sudden situation.
Where a fixed lead is the safer choice
Busy pavements, roads, and anywhere with other dogs or people close by are where a retractable lead's extra length becomes a liability rather than a benefit — a dog can end up several metres away just as a hazard appears, and it takes a moment to reel them back in.
Puppies and dogs still learning lead manners generally do better on a standard fixed lead too, since the consistent length helps you shape their walking behaviour, where a retractable lead's varying tension can send mixed signals about what's expected.
Choosing and using one safely
Match the lead's rated weight to your dog rather than assuming any retractable lead suits any size of dog — an underrated lead can fail under a sudden strong pull. Keep a firm grip on the handle at all times and lock the lead short in any situation with other dogs, people, children or traffic nearby.
Avoid letting the cord or tape run out fully and go slack, since a sudden pull on a fully extended lead travels faster and with more force than the same pull on a shorter one, which is where most retractable lead injuries to hands and dogs happen.
