Dog training leads
A training lead is longer than a standard everyday lead — often several metres — and is used to give a dog controlled freedom during recall practice or early off-lead training, rather than for a normal walk on a path. It's a specific tool for a specific job, not simply a longer version of the lead you'd use day to day.
What training leads are actually for
The extra length lets a dog range further away and explore more naturally while you retain a physical way to stop them if recall doesn't work in the moment, which is the whole point during the stage between full lead control and reliable off-lead recall. Reflective versions add visibility for early morning, evening or low-light training sessions.
They're not intended for a normal town or path walk, where several metres of trailing lead is more likely to tangle around your legs, another dog, or a passer-by than to help with anything.
Using one safely
Open, quiet spaces work far better than anywhere busy — a park with other dogs and people around turns a training lead into a tripping hazard rather than a training aid. Let the lead trail loosely rather than holding it taut throughout, stepping on it or gathering it in only when you need to regain control.
Build length up gradually rather than starting at full extension with a dog who's new to recall work, and always keep the lead attached to a well-fitted harness or collar your dog can't easily slip out of at distance.

Common questions
- How long should a training lead be?
- Lengths of five metres or more are common for recall training, giving a dog meaningful freedom to move away while still leaving you a physical way to stop them if needed. Start shorter if you're new to using one, and build up length as both you and your dog get more confident.
- Can I use a training lead on a normal walk?
- It's not really designed for that — the extra length is more likely to tangle around people, other dogs or your own legs on a busy path than it is to be useful. Save it for open, quiet spaces where the length can actually be put to use safely.
- Should I attach a training lead to a harness or collar?
- A well-fitted harness is generally the safer choice for a training lead, since the sudden stop of a dog reaching the end of several metres of lead puts less strain on the body with a harness than with a collar around the neck. Make sure whichever you use fits securely and can't be backed out of.
