Choosing a design

• Breezy Love Purple — A softer print than the geometrics, and the one to pick if you already have the matching harness. Standard 1.2m in three builds, with Red Dingo's hardware and the five-year guarantee sitting behind the clip.
• Bumble Bee Black — One point two metres is short enough to keep a dog beside you on a pavement, which is what a town lead should do. Bee print on black hides the mud. Three sizes, five-year guarantee.
• Bumble Bee Turquoise — Turquoise with the bee print, which is a good deal easier to spot on a peg than another black lead. One point two metres, three sizes, Red Dingo hardware and their five-year guarantee.
• Camouflage Green — Camouflage does exactly what the name says, so this is not the lead to buy if you want to spot it dropped in long grass. It is a good-looking everyday lead otherwise: 1.2 metres, solid hardware, five-year guarantee, three widths.

• Stars White on Cool Grey — A pale lead records every wet field you walk through in a way navy does not. Plenty of people take that trade because it is easier to see on a dull day. If you want it pristine in March, buy black.
• Stars White on Red — White on red is about as legible as a print gets on a wet grey day. It shows against grass, against a dark coat and in the boot of a car, which covers most of the places a lead goes missing.
• Stars White on Turquoise — Two black leads on the same hook are indistinguishable at seven in the morning, and clipping the wrong size to the wrong dog is how you end up trailing a strap. Turquoise stars are distinct from almost anything else on the rack.
• Tropical Green — Summer is harder on kit than winter: sand works into everything and saltwater dries a lead stiff. Rinse it in fresh water after a beach day, particularly the clip. Bright enough to find near a windbreak, which is half the point.
