Hatchwells pet care

Hatchwells is a long-running UK pet care brand, and the range we stock covers more ground than a single category: dental care for dogs and cats, and cage bird basics like chalk blocks and drinkers. It suits owners restocking small, unglamorous essentials rather than shopping for one flagship product.

Dental care for dogs and cats

The dental side of the range includes finger and standard toothbrushes, a puppy and kitten toothpaste starter pack, and Dentifresh granulated charcoal, aimed at owners building a brushing routine or tackling tartar build-up between vet checks. None of these replace a dental check with your vet if you notice bad breath, bleeding gums or a tooth that looks damaged.

A finger brush is usually the easier starting point for a dog or cat unused to having their teeth handled, since it lets you control pressure with your fingertip rather than manoeuvring a handle. Introduce brushing gradually and stop if your pet finds it genuinely distressing rather than just mildly tolerant.

Cage bird basics

The cage bird items in the range — chalk blocks, chalk powder, rock sulphur and cage drinkers — are the kind of small, recurring purchases that keep a cage properly equipped rather than exciting extras. A mineral block gives birds like budgies and canaries something to peck at for beak conditioning and mineral intake alongside their normal seed or pellet diet.

We stock a selection from Hatchwells' wider catalogue rather than every product they make, so what is shown in the grid above is what is currently available to order rather than the brand's full range. It suits an owner topping up a few specific basics rather than looking for one big-ticket purchase.

Common questions

Do I need to brush my dog's teeth every day?
Daily brushing gives the best results against plaque build-up, but even a few times a week is better than none. Start gradually with a finger brush and pet-safe toothpaste, and speak to your vet if you notice bad breath, bleeding gums or reluctance to eat, rather than brushing through a problem.
What is a chalk block for in a bird cage?
It gives cage birds something to peck and gnaw at, which helps keep the beak worn to a healthy length and provides some mineral content alongside their normal food. It is a supplement to a proper seed or pellet diet, not a replacement for one.
Can I use dog toothpaste on a cat, or the other way round?
Check the packaging rather than assuming — some pet toothpaste is formulated for both, but flavours and abrasiveness can differ between products aimed at dogs and cats. Never use human toothpaste on either, since it often contains ingredients that are not meant to be swallowed by a pet.
Does Hatchwells make anything for small pets?
The current range we stock includes hamster pots alongside the dental and cage bird ranges, though it is a small part of what Hatchwells makes overall. What is shown in the grid above reflects what we currently have available to order.
