The reason a dog ends up on a fish-and-potato food is almost never that it likes fish. It is that something else disagreed with it, and fish and potato is where a vet's list of less-usual proteins tends to start. By the time an owner is reading this kind of label, they have generally read a few others first.

This is Arden Grange's sensitive recipe in its senior and light version, and it is a complete food. Ocean white fish is 28% — 23% dried and 5% fresh — with sweet potato at another 28% and potato at 16%, then beet pulp, chicken oil, fish digest, whole linseed at 2%, dried krill, yeast and whole dried egg at 1%. On top of that sit the extras Arden Grange declare by weight rather than mention in passing: glucosamine and MSM at 740mg/kg each, chondroitin sulphate at 520mg/kg, prebiotic FOS at 1050mg/kg and MOS at 465mg/kg, plus dried rosehips at 230mg/kg and blueberries at 150mg/kg. The analysis is protein 22%, fat 12%, ash 8.5%, fibre 4%, calcium 1.6% and phosphorus 0.9%, with omega-3 at 2.5% and omega-6 at 2.7%, at 352kcal per 100g.

It is a fish recipe, and it contains chicken. Chicken oil is in the ingredient list and whole dried egg is in there at 1%. That is irrelevant to most buyers and absolutely decisive for a few: if your dog is on an exclusion diet because chicken is the suspect, this is not a food you can use, however good the white fish figure looks. Worth knowing too that senior and light are one recipe here, so it is pitched at an older dog carrying a little too much — a lean, hard-working senior may want something less restrained.

Who it's for: owners of an older dog with a sensitive stomach or itchy skin, no chicken exclusion in place, and a bit of stiffness in the back end.
