Flea & Tick Treatments for Dogs and Cats

Little things. Happy cats.

Choose a flea treatment by species first and weight second: the dose is set by both, and a dog product can be dangerous for a cat. Spot-ons and tablets treat the pet; most of a flea problem lives in the home, so treat that too.

Our quick picks

In-stock options for different needs, with the practical reason we would choose each one.

  • Beaphar FIPROtec Spot-On Cat

    Best spot-on for cats

    Beaphar FIPROtec Spot-On Cat

    Why we picked it

Four treatments in one box is the sensible unit, because fleas are a rolling problem rather than a one-off and single pipettes are the expensive way to buy them. Beaphar sell this over the counter, so nobody needs an appointment to start. We keep the cat pack and the dog pack apart on the shelf deliberately.

  • Bob Martin Clear Plus Spot-On Flea, Tick & Lice Treatment Small Dogs

    Best spot-on for small dogs

Bob Martin Clear Plus Spot-On Flea, Tick & Lice Treatment Small Dogs

    Why we picked it

Two active ingredients doing two different jobs is the actual point of this one - Fipronil kills the adult fleas and ticks, while (S)-methoprene stops the next generation of eggs and larvae developing behind it. That's a longer-lasting fix than a single ingredient alone, provided it's the right weight band for your dog.

  • Johnson's 4fleas Kitten Cat Tabs

    Best fast-acting tablet

    Johnson's 4fleas Kitten Cat Tabs

    Why we picked it

15 minutes to start working is genuinely fast for a flea treatment, and being safe to use alongside other topical treatments means it doesn't box you into choosing one or the other. No residue on the coat or in the home also matters for a cat that spends time on the furniture straight after treatment.

Never use a dog treatment on a cat

Some spot-ons sold for dogs contain permethrin, which is highly toxic to cats, even in small amounts. Only use a product labelled for cats on a cat, and keep a freshly treated dog away from cats until the spot-on has dried if the pack says so.

If a cat has been treated with a dog product and starts twitching, drooling or trembling, contact a vet straight away.

Treat every pet and the home

Fleas you see on a pet are only part of the problem. Eggs and larvae fall into carpets, sofas and bedding, which is why ESCCAP UK advises treating every dog and cat in the home and the environment, not just the one scratching.

Wash pet bedding hot, vacuum often and empty the vacuum outside. A household flea spray reaches cracks and soft furnishings the vacuum misses; follow its label on ventilation and keeping pets away.

Ticks need a different check

Ticks are most active from spring to autumn in long grass and woodland. Check your dog after walks, especially around the head, ears and legs.

Remove a tick with a proper tick hook, twisting rather than pulling, so the mouthparts come out too. Some products also repel or kill ticks; check the label for which parasites each one covers.

Products here and products from the vet

Everything in this collection is a general-sale product you can buy without a prescription. Stronger and broader treatments, including many that also cover worms, are prescribed by vets.

If fleas keep coming back after treating pets and home properly, or your pet’s skin is sore, ask your vet: they can recommend a prescription product and check for flea allergy.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

Can I use dog flea treatment on my cat?

No. Some dog products contain permethrin, which is toxic to cats. Use only products labelled for cats.

Why do I still have fleas after treating my pet?

Eggs and larvae in the home keep hatching for weeks. Treat all pets, wash bedding and treat the house.

How do I choose the right dose?

Weigh your pet and pick the pack for their species and weight band, and check the minimum age.
