Cornish Rex

The Cornish Rex is a distinctive, fine-boned cat with a soft, wavy, curly coat caused by a natural genetic mutation first found in Cornwall, England. It has large ears, a slender arched body and an athletic, greyhound-like build, paired with a playful, affectionate and very active personality.

Both have curly coats from separate genetic mutations, but they differ. The Cornish Rex has only the soft, downy undercoat in tight, even waves and a sleek build, while the Devon Rex has a looser, coarser curl, an even more pixie-like face with very large ears, and shorter, sparser fur.

No cat is truly hypoallergenic, including the Cornish Rex. Because they lack the longer guard hairs and shed comparatively little, some allergy sufferers tolerate them better, but they still produce the Fel d 1 protein responsible for most cat allergies. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the breed first.

Their short, curly coat sheds little and needs minimal brushing, as vigorous grooming can damage the delicate hair. However, with so little fur they can feel the cold, so they appreciate a warm home. Their large ears tend to produce wax and benefit from gentle, regular checking and cleaning.

Cornish Rex cats are lively, playful and intelligent, often described as kitten-like throughout their lives. They are affectionate, people-oriented and enjoy climbing, jumping and games, sometimes even fetching toys. Their warm, soft coat and love of cuddles make them devoted lap cats once the games are over.

Yes. Their sociable, energetic and friendly nature usually makes them well suited to active families, getting on well with gentle children and other pets. They thrive on attention and stimulation, so they suit homes that can offer plenty of play and company rather than long hours alone.

With good care, Cornish Rex cats often live into their mid-teens and sometimes longer. As with all breeds, a balanced diet, a healthy weight, parasite prevention and regular veterinary check-ups, along with buying from a responsible breeder, all help support a long and healthy life.

Good with children. As a general guide they are tolerant and sociable in a family home. Always teach children to handle cats gently and give the cat space to retreat.

Devoted lap cat. Cornish Rexs typically love close company and lap time.

Moderately chatty. They are moderately chatty.

Wash-and-go; shedding is minimal. The coat is generally easy to care for with the occasional brush.

Needs constant company. They strongly prefer company and can become stressed or lonely if left for long periods — a feline companion or a less empty house suits them better.

Very high energy. They need plenty of daily play, climbing and enrichment to stay happy.
