Who makes Iams?

Iams is currently made by Mars, Incorporated, which bought the brand from Procter & Gamble in 2014. It started life much earlier than that, though: American animal nutritionist Paul Iams founded the company in 1946, and it changed hands twice before landing with the pet food giant that also owns Pedigree and Whiskas.

The brand's history

Paul Iams founded the Iams Company in Ohio in 1946, building it around dry pet food formulated with more meat than was typical for the time. Procter & Gamble bought the company in 1999, expanding it into a global brand alongside its sister range Eukanuba, before selling the pet food business to Mars, Incorporated in 2014.

Under Mars, Iams now sits in the same portfolio as Pedigree, Whiskas and Royal Canin, though it has kept its own separate branding and recipes rather than being folded into another brand.

What we stock

Our Iams range covers both dogs and cats: dry food across puppy, adult and senior life stages for dogs, and dry and wet recipes across kitten, adult and senior life stages for cats. It is a mainstream complete food range rather than a specialist one, built around named meat sources such as chicken.

As with most life-stage ranges, the puppy or kitten formula is worth sticking to until your vet or the packaging confirms your pet has reached adulthood, since the calorie and nutrient balance is set differently for a growing animal than for an adult.

Iams and Eukanuba, and how they differ

Eukanuba was developed as a sister range under the same original ownership, generally positioned as the more premium of the two, with recipes aimed at active or performance dogs alongside its standard life-stage lines. Both brands moved to Mars in the same 2014 deal and are still sold separately today rather than one having replaced the other.

We currently stock the Iams range rather than Eukanuba, so if you are comparing the two on a pack in a different shop, the Iams name is the one to look for on our shelves.

Common questions

Is Iams owned by Mars?
Yes, Mars, Incorporated bought the Iams pet food business from Procter & Gamble in 2014, and it now sits in the same portfolio as Pedigree and Whiskas.
Who founded Iams?
Paul Iams, an American animal nutritionist, founded the company in Ohio in 1946, long before either Procter & Gamble or Mars owned it. The brand built its early reputation on using more meat in its recipes than was typical for pet food at the time.
Is Iams the same company as Eukanuba?
They are sister brands rather than the same product line, both developed under Procter & Gamble's ownership and both later sold to Mars in the same 2014 deal, but Eukanuba and Iams remain separately branded ranges.
Does Iams make food for both cats and dogs?
Yes, the range we stock covers both, with separate dry food lines for dogs across puppy, adult and senior stages, and dry and wet food for cats across kitten, adult and senior stages.
