A small-breed puppy is essentially grown by its first birthday; a large-breed puppy is still growing well past it, which is why large-breed puppy food is fed for longer than the word 'puppy' suggests.

This IAMS recipe is for large-breed puppies: dogs expected to reach 25-40kg as adults are fed it from 4 weeks old until 12 months, and those 40kg and over from 4 weeks until 24 months. It's built on dried chicken and turkey (26%, 16% named as chicken) plus fresh chicken (10%), with protein at 26%, fat at 14%, and DHA added at 0.18% for brain development.

• 2kg bag, complete dry food for large-breed puppies
• Fed from 4 weeks; until 12 months (25-40kg adults) or 24 months (40kg+ adults)
• Dried chicken and turkey 26% (16% named as chicken); fresh chicken 10%
• Protein 26%, fat 14%, crude fibre 2.6%, crude ash 6%
• DHA 0.18%, for brain development
• Grain-free recipe (produced in a factory that also handles wheat)

On how long to feed it. The 'until 24 months' instruction is only for puppies expected to weigh 40kg or more as adults — a 25-40kg breed comes off it at 12 months. Feeding a large-breed puppy formula for longer than your dog's own expected adult weight calls for isn't something IAMS' instructions support.

Who it's for: owners of a puppy expected to grow into a large or giant adult dog, wanting a formula with a clear feeding-duration guide by expected adult weight.
