Is Flexi any good?

We don't publish star ratings or reviews on this site, so here is an honest answer instead: Flexi is a well-established maker of retractable dog leads, and the build quality across the range we stock is generally solid for what a retractable lead is designed to do. Whether Flexi, or a retractable lead of any brand, is the right choice for your dog is a separate question worth answering honestly too.

What the range does well

Flexi's tape and cord leads come in a range of lengths and load ratings, from smaller cord leads for lighter dogs up to longer, heavier-duty tape versions for large breeds, and the mechanism itself is generally reliable within its stated weight limit. The brake and lock buttons are a genuine feature over a fixed-length lead, letting you shorten the lead instantly near roads or other dogs.

Comfort grips and reflective detailing on several models are useful additions for evening walks, and the range is wide enough that most dog sizes have an appropriately rated option rather than one lead trying to cover every size.

Where a retractable lead isn't the right tool

A retractable lead of any brand gives less direct control than a fixed-length lead, since the cord or tape can extend before you can react, which matters most near roads, other dogs, or anywhere a dog needs to be held close quickly. Many trainers and vets recommend a standard fixed lead for dogs that are still learning loose-lead walking, or for any dog near traffic, and keep a retractable lead for open, controlled spaces instead.

The thin cord on some retractable designs can also cause a nastier rope-burn or cut if it runs across skin under tension, which is worth knowing whether you choose Flexi or another brand — it's a feature of how retractable leads work rather than something specific to one manufacturer.

Common questions

Is a Flexi lead safe to use?
Used within its rated weight limit and in the right setting, a retractable lead is generally safe, and Flexi's mechanism is well established. It is worth using a fixed-length lead near roads or other dogs, since a retractable lead gives less immediate control in those situations, whichever brand you choose.
How do I choose the right length and strength of Flexi lead?
Check the weight rating printed on the lead against your dog's actual weight, and choose the shorter tape or cord options for a smaller dog. Buying based on your dog's current size rather than a size they may grow into avoids a lead that is either too flimsy or unnecessarily bulky.
Are retractable leads bad for training a dog to walk nicely?
Many trainers advise against relying on a retractable lead while a dog is still learning loose-lead walking, since the constant give and take can reinforce pulling rather than discourage it. A fixed-length lead is usually recommended for that stage, with a retractable lead introduced later in open spaces.
Does Flexi make leads for large dogs?
Yes, the range includes higher weight-rated tape leads intended for larger breeds, alongside lighter cord versions for smaller dogs. Always check the specific weight rating on the lead you're considering rather than assuming a larger-looking lead automatically suits a bigger dog.
