Is Frontline Spot On any good?
Frontline Spot On is one of the most widely used spot-on flea and tick treatments for dogs and cats in the UK, and it does what it is designed to do reasonably well: it kills fleas and ticks already on the animal and helps prevent a new infestation taking hold, applied at the interval stated on the pack. It is not a cure-all, and like any flea treatment its effectiveness depends on using it correctly and consistently, which is worth understanding before deciding if it is the right choice for your pet.
What Frontline Spot On actually does
The product works by being applied to the skin, usually at the back of the neck, where it spreads through the coat's natural oils rather than being absorbed into the bloodstream the way a tablet would be. It targets fleas and ticks that come into contact with the coat, and is one of the older, more established products in this category, which is part of why it remains widely recognised.
It is a general sale product, which means it is available without a prescription, and it has been used on a huge number of pets over a long period. That track record is a reasonable point in its favour, though it does not mean it is automatically the strongest option for every household or every level of infestation.
Where it can fall short
Like any spot-on treatment, Frontline needs to be applied correctly and on schedule to work as intended — a missed or late application creates a gap where fleas can re-establish. It also needs direct contact to work, so a pet that swims or is bathed frequently soon after application may get reduced protection until the coat's oils redistribute the product again.
Some households with an established flea problem in the home, rather than just on the pet, find a spot-on treatment alone is not enough, since fleas living in carpets and bedding need addressing separately. In that situation, treating the environment alongside the pet is generally necessary regardless of which spot-on product is used.
Is it the right choice for your pet
For routine, ongoing flea and tick prevention on a healthy adult dog or cat, Frontline is a reasonable, well-established option, and being general sale means it does not require a prescription to buy. If your pet has a specific skin condition, is very young, pregnant, or unwell, check with your vet before starting any new flea treatment rather than assuming one product suits every animal.
If you have tried a spot-on treatment before without success, it is worth discussing with your vet whether resistance, an environmental infestation, or a different underlying issue might be the reason, rather than assuming a different brand will automatically solve it.
