What makes a mesh harness different
The body of the harness is a soft, breathable mesh rather than solid nylon webbing, so it sits lighter on the dog and doesn't trap heat against the chest the way a padded winter harness can. That makes it a sensible everyday choice for small and toy breeds, and for any dog during the warmer months regardless of size.
Most, like the Mesh Harness Red or the Ancol Comfort Mesh Harness, step into a colour range so you can pick a size and shade rather than being limited to one plain design. They're generally step-in or simple clip-and-go designs, which matters for a dog that dislikes having a harness pulled on over its head.
What mesh isn't built for
A lightweight mesh harness isn't the strongest option for a big, powerful dog that pulls hard on the lead, and it isn't designed for it — the fabric and stitching are built for comfort and breathability rather than heavy-duty strength. A larger dog that pulls consistently is better suited to a padded webbing harness or a front-clip no-pull design.
It also isn't a great choice for a dog that regularly gets muddy or swims, since mesh takes longer to dry than solid webbing and can hold onto smells. For that kind of use a wipeable webbing harness will generally last better and stay fresher between washes.
Getting the size right
Measure your dog's chest girth, just behind the front legs, rather than guessing from their weight — two dogs of the same weight can have very different chest sizes depending on build. Most mesh harnesses list a girth range on the packaging or product page, and sitting between two sizes usually means sizing up rather than down for comfort.
A well-fitted harness should let you fit two flat fingers under the strap at the chest and shoulders. Too loose and a determined dog can back out of it on a walk; too tight and it rubs, particularly under the front legs where mesh can bunch if the fit isn't right.
