Mesh harnesses are the lightest, most breathable style we stock — an open-weave fabric rather than solid webbing, which is why they're the first thing we point owners towards for small dogs, short walks in warm weather, or any dog that finds a heavier harness uncomfortable against the chest.
What makes a mesh harness different
The body of the harness is a soft, breathable mesh rather than solid nylon webbing, so it sits lighter on the dog and doesn't trap heat against the chest the way a padded winter harness can. That makes it a sensible everyday choice for small and toy breeds, and for any dog during the warmer months regardless of size.
Most, like the Mesh Harness Red or the Ancol Comfort Mesh Harness, step into a colour range so you can pick a size and shade rather than being limited to one plain design. They're generally step-in or simple clip-and-go designs, which matters for a dog that dislikes having a harness pulled on over its head.
What mesh isn't built for
A lightweight mesh harness isn't the strongest option for a big, powerful dog that pulls hard on the lead, and it isn't designed for it — the fabric and stitching are built for comfort and breathability rather than heavy-duty strength. A larger dog that pulls consistently is better suited to a padded webbing harness or a front-clip no-pull design.
It also isn't a great choice for a dog that regularly gets muddy or swims, since mesh takes longer to dry than solid webbing and can hold onto smells. For that kind of use a wipeable webbing harness will generally last better and stay fresher between washes.
Getting the size right
Measure your dog's chest girth, just behind the front legs, rather than guessing from their weight — two dogs of the same weight can have very different chest sizes depending on build. Most mesh harnesses list a girth range on the packaging or product page, and sitting between two sizes usually means sizing up rather than down for comfort.
A well-fitted harness should let you fit two flat fingers under the strap at the chest and shoulders. Too loose and a determined dog can back out of it on a walk; too tight and it rubs, particularly under the front legs where mesh can bunch if the fit isn't right.

- Are mesh harnesses suitable for dogs that pull on the lead?
- Not really for a dog that pulls hard and consistently, since mesh is built for lightness and comfort rather than heavy-duty strength. A padded webbing harness or a front-clip design gives you more control and holds up better to sustained pulling.
- Can mesh harnesses get wet or go in the wash?
- Most can be hand washed and left to air dry, but mesh takes longer to dry than solid webbing and can hold onto damp smells if it isn't dried properly. For a dog that swims or gets muddy regularly, a wipeable webbing harness is usually the more practical everyday choice.
- What size mesh harness does my dog need?
- Measure your dog's chest girth just behind the front legs and check it against the size guide for the specific harness, since sizing varies between styles even at the same stated size. If your dog measures between two sizes, sizing up generally gives a more comfortable fit than sizing down.
- Is a mesh harness warm enough for winter walks?
