Dog Shampoo
More care. More cuddles.
Dogs need far fewer baths than most owners think, and a dog shampoo rather than a human one. Choose a gentle wash for the occasional muddy day, oatmeal for dry or sensitive skin, a no-rinse foam for quick clean-ups, and a medicated wash only when your vet has advised one.

Best everyday shampoo and conditioner
Bugalugs 4-in-1 Lavender & Chamomile Dog Shampoo 500ml
Why we picked it
Dilutes at ten to one, which is what makes a 500ml bottle last a season and is the reason I stock the Bugalugs range. Lavender and chamomile for the dog who finds the bath itself the difficult part.

Best no-rinse foam
Bugalugs No-Rinse Dog Shampoo 200ml – Baby Fresh & Coconut Lime
Why we picked it
For the walks that end too late for a bath, and the dogs that never made peace with one. Pump onto a dry coat, work it in, brush through. No taps, no towels, no damp dog steaming on the sofa.
- In stock
- Tracked delivery: 1–2 working days

Best medicated wash
Johnson's Medicated Shampoo
Why we picked it
It's formulated for scurf specifically rather than general coat conditioning, which matters if that's the actual problem you're washing for. Buying it in 5 litres only makes sense for regular use, which suits a groomer or a household washing often.

Fast UK deliveryA little guidance
Which dog shampoo?
| Need | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An occasional bath | Gentle everyday shampoo | It cleans without stripping the coat’s natural oils. |
| Dry or sensitive skin | Oatmeal or fragrance-free | Fewer added scents means less to irritate. |
| Muddy paws, no time | No-rinse foam or wipes | Spot-cleans without a full bath. |
| A diagnosed skin condition | The wash your vet recommends | Medicated shampoos treat a specific problem. |
Bath only when they need it
Blue Cross advises leaving dogs unwashed for as long as possible: a dog’s coat and skin carry natural oils that keep them healthy, and frequent washing strips them.
Most mud brushes out once it has dried. Rinse with water after a beach or a muddy walk, and save shampoo for when your dog really is dirty or smelly.
Why not human shampoo
Dog skin is thinner than ours and has a different balance, so products made for people can leave it dry and itchy. A dog shampoo is made for that skin.
Avoid getting shampoo in the eyes and ears. A cotton wool plug in each ear and a damp cloth for the face make bath time easier.
Brush first, rinse well
Brush out mats and loose coat before the bath: water tightens tangles. Wet the coat right through with lukewarm water, lather, then rinse until the water runs clear.
Leftover shampoo is a common cause of itching after a bath. Take as long rinsing as washing, especially on thick or double coats.
Dry them properly
Towel off as much water as you can, then let a short coat air-dry somewhere warm. A drying coat helps a long or thick-coated dog that would otherwise stay damp for hours.
Keep a newly bathed dog out of the cold until dry. If your dog’s skin is red, flaky or sore, see your vet rather than trying one shampoo after another.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions
How often should I wash my dog?
Only when they need it. Most dogs need a bath every few months at most; rinse off mud with water in between.
Can I use human shampoo on my dog?
It is best not to. Dog shampoo is made for dog skin, which is thinner and differently balanced.
What is no-rinse dog shampoo?
A foam or spray you rub in and towel off, for spot-cleaning between baths.
