Little things. Happy cats.
A cat treat is rarely just a treat. It is how you get a nervous cat to come to you, how a tablet goes down, and how a carrier stops being a trap — which makes the format matter more than the flavour.

A little guidance
| If you need to… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Win over a nervous or new cat | A creamy lickable stick | Hand-held and slow to finish, so the cat chooses to stay near you rather than grabbing and leaving. |
| Get a tablet into a cat | A soft treat you can hide it in | Cats detect a pill in dry food easily. A soft, strong-smelling treat wrapped around it has a far better hit rate. |
| Make the carrier less frightening | Anything they love, fed inside it | Leave the carrier out and feed treats in it for weeks before the appointment. The carrier only being used for vet trips is why it is feared. |
| Do something about teeth | A crunchy dental treat | Shaped so the tooth sinks in before it breaks. It helps on the surfaces it reaches and does not replace a vet check. |
| Give a cat something to do | A treat ball or puzzle | Makes them work for it. Most indoor cats are under-stimulated rather than under-fed. |
Nearly every cat treat is a complementary food, meaning it is not a meal and is not balanced to be one. That matters more in a cat than a dog simply because of scale: an average cat eats around 200 to 250 calories a day, so a few treats is a much bigger share of the total than the same handful would be for a labrador.
The usual advice is to keep treats under about a tenth of daily intake and to take the difference off meals. A cat that is mysteriously ignoring dinner is very often a cat that has already been fed by somebody else in the house.
Response to catnip is inherited, and a significant minority of cats simply do not have it. Kittens under a few months old usually show nothing either, which is not a sign the toy is a dud. If your cat is one of the non-responders, silver vine and valerian get a reaction from many cats that ignore catnip entirely.
The effect is short, generally five to fifteen minutes, and is followed by a period where the same cat will not respond again for an hour or so. Leaving a catnip toy out permanently blunts it; putting it away between sessions keeps it interesting.
Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.
A common guide is no more than about a tenth of daily calories. Cats are small, so that is fewer treats than people expect, and the rest of the intake should be a complete food.
Almost never. They are complementary, which means they are fed alongside a proper diet rather than instead of it. We show the statement on each product page where the brand publishes it.
The response is inherited and some cats simply do not have it. Very young kittens usually do not react either. Silver vine or valerian often works where catnip does not.
Something soft and strongly scented that you can mould around the tablet. Dry treats and food are easy for a cat to eat around.
They help on the surfaces the crunch reaches. They are a useful daily habit rather than a substitute for veterinary dental care, which most cats need at some point.
