Treats are complementary, and cats are small
Nearly every cat treat is a complementary food, meaning it is not a meal and is not balanced to be one. That matters more in a cat than a dog simply because of scale: an average cat eats around 200 to 250 calories a day, so a few treats is a much bigger share of the total than the same handful would be for a labrador.
The usual advice is to keep treats under about a tenth of daily intake and to take the difference off meals. A cat that is mysteriously ignoring dinner is very often a cat that has already been fed by somebody else in the house.
Catnip works on most cats, and does nothing at all to the rest
Response to catnip is inherited, and a significant minority of cats simply do not have it. Kittens under a few months old usually show nothing either, which is not a sign the toy is a dud. If your cat is one of the non-responders, silver vine and valerian get a reaction from many cats that ignore catnip entirely.
The effect is short, generally five to fifteen minutes, and is followed by a period where the same cat will not respond again for an hour or so. Leaving a catnip toy out permanently blunts it; putting it away between sessions keeps it interesting.

How many treats can a cat have?
A common guide is no more than about a tenth of daily calories. Cats are small, so that is fewer treats than people expect, and the rest of the intake should be a complete food.
Are cat treats a complete food?
Almost never. They are complementary, which means they are fed alongside a proper diet rather than instead of it. We show the statement on each product page where the brand publishes it.
Why does my cat ignore catnip?
The response is inherited and some cats simply do not have it. Very young kittens usually do not react either. Silver vine or valerian often works where catnip does not.
What is the best treat for giving tablets?
Something soft and strongly scented that you can mould around the tablet. Dry treats and food are easy for a cat to eat around.
Do dental treats work for cats?
They help on the surfaces the crunch reaches. They are a useful daily habit rather than a substitute for veterinary dental care, which most cats need at some point.
