Pro Plan dog and cat food recalls — what to know
Recalls are announced by the manufacturer and the UK's food safety authorities, not by a retailer like us, so we do not keep our own running list of Pro Plan recalls. What we can explain is how a UK pet food recall actually works, where to check for one yourself, and what happens with our own stock if a product we sell is ever affected.
How UK pet food recalls actually work
When a pet food manufacturer identifies a problem with a batch of their product, they issue a recall notice specifying the exact product, batch code and date range affected, and this is typically also listed by the Food Standards Agency. Retailers are expected to pull the affected batches from sale and, where possible, contact customers who may have bought them.
A recall notice is always specific to a batch or date range, not a whole brand or product line indefinitely, so a past recall on one product does not mean every Pro Plan recipe is affected or has ever been affected.
Where to check for a current recall
The manufacturer's own website is the first place to check for any current recall notice on a specific Pro Plan product, and the Food Standards Agency publishes UK-wide food alerts covering pet food as well as food for people.
If you have a specific bag or pouch you are concerned about, the batch code printed on the packaging is the detail you would need to check against any notice, since recalls are almost always batch-specific rather than covering an entire product indefinitely.
What we do if a product we sell is affected
If a recall is issued for something we currently stock, we remove it from sale and follow the guidance given in the manufacturer's notice, which typically covers what a customer who has already bought an affected batch should do.
