What's actually in the Pro Plan range
Pro Plan is Purina's core adult and puppy line, built around named life stages and needs rather than one general-purpose recipe: Everyday Nutrition formulas for typical adult dogs, Puppy Healthy Start formulas sized for small, medium and large breed puppies, a Sensitive Skin formula for dogs prone to coat or skin issues, and a Sterilised formula aimed at neutered or spayed cats with lower energy needs.
The puppy formulas in particular are split by expected adult size — medium, large and large athletic breed versions exist, since a fast-growing large breed puppy has different needs to a smaller one, and feeding the size-matched formula rather than a generic puppy food is the more sensible choice where one's available.
Picking the right formula
If your dog is a healthy adult with no particular sensitivity, an Everyday Nutrition formula in the appropriate size band is the straightforward starting point. A dog with visibly dry, itchy skin or a dull coat may do better on the Sensitive Skin formula, though a vet is worth consulting first if the issue is persistent rather than assuming a food switch will resolve it.
For a neutered cat, a Sterilised formula is worth considering since it's built around the lower calorie needs neutering typically brings, which helps avoid the weight gain that's common after the procedure if feeding isn't adjusted. Checking the life-stage and size guidance printed on the pack against your own dog's age and weight remains the most reliable way to confirm a formula actually fits, rather than choosing on the name alone.
