How the range is structured
Pro Plan splits its dog food by size and life stage first — small, medium and large breed puppy, adult and mature — and then layers on a need where one applies, such as sensitive skin, weight management or a sterilised adult formula for a less active neutered dog. The cat side follows a similar pattern, with adult, senior and specific formulas including a renal-support recipe for older cats.
That layered structure is worth knowing before you shop it, because two bags that look similar on the shelf can be built for genuinely different dogs. A large-breed puppy formula controls calcium and calorie density differently to a small-breed one, and a sterilised adult recipe is calorie-adjusted for a dog whose energy needs have dropped after neutering rather than for an active working dog of the same age.

Choosing the right recipe
Start from your dog or cat's life stage and size rather than the flavour on the front of the bag — puppy, adult or senior, and for dogs, their adult size band. From there, only move to a specific-need formula, such as sensitive skin or sterilised, if it genuinely applies, since a targeted recipe is built to solve a particular problem rather than to be generally better.
If you are switching from a different food, do it gradually over a week or so, mixing in increasing amounts of the new food rather than swapping bags overnight. That matters more than the brand name on either bag, and it is the single biggest thing owners get wrong when changing food.
