A "small and mini" dog food only earns the label if the feeding table actually stops around ten kilos, and this one does: from 35g a day for a dog under a kilo up to 190g for a ten-kilo dog getting one to three hours of activity.

Chicken (20%) is the first ingredient, ahead of wheat, dried poultry protein, corn and rice (7%), with animal fats and soya meal further down the list. Protein comes out at 28%, fat at 17%, crude ash at 7.5% and crude fibre at 2%. It is marked as complete for small and mini adult dogs aged 12 months to 9 years, with vitamins A, D3, E and C plus a standard trace-mineral pack.

• 7KG bag

On the age range. Purina mark this as suitable from 12 months to 9 years, which means it is not the right food either side of that: not for a puppy still growing, and worth reviewing once a small dog moves past 9, since nothing on the card tells us what should change after that.

Who it's for: owners of a small or mini adult dog, roughly ten kilos or under, who want an everyday complete food rather than a size-specific prescription diet.
