Dry food for kittens and senior cats

Kittens and senior cats sit at opposite ends of a cat's life but share the same reason for needing a different dry food from a standard adult recipe — their nutritional needs genuinely change with age. We stock dedicated kitten and senior (generally 7+) dry foods rather than one all-life-stages product for both.

Kitten dry food

James Wellbeloved Kitten Dry Cat Food comes in fish or turkey, both single-source proteins excluding common allergens, and Iams Advanced Nutrition Kitten with Ocean Fish and Iams for Vitality Kitten Food with Fresh Chicken both add DHA for brain and eye development alongside growth support. Go-cat Kitten Chicken, Turkey & Milk and the Kitten/Junior version carry age-banded feeding guidance up to 12 months, and Lily's Kitchen Kitten Chicken & White Fish is a grain-free option in the same age bracket.

A kitten's dry food is generally more calorie and nutrient-dense than an adult recipe to support rapid growth, which is why feeding an adult food to a kitten, or the reverse, is worth avoiding rather than treating dry cat food as interchangeable across ages.

Senior dry food (7+)

James Wellbeloved Senior Dry Cat Food in chicken or turkey adds taurine and glucosamine, the turkey recipe specifically formulated with added joint-care ingredients, and Iams Senior Dry Cat Food Chicken and Iams 7+ Senior Cat Advance Nutrition Chicken are both wheat-free with added glucosamine and taurine too. Purina One Senior 7+ Bifensis Chicken adds a probiotic alongside a weight-based feeding guide, and Harringtons Cat Senior Chicken is built around freshly prepared chicken for cats over seven.

Most senior recipes lean on similar additions — taurine, glucosamine and sometimes a probiotic — reflecting common changes in joint and digestive health as cats age, though the right food for an individual senior cat with a diagnosed condition should be discussed with your vet rather than chosen on label claims alone.

Common questions

At what age should I switch my cat to senior food?
Most senior cat foods are formulated for cats aged seven and over, which is when many brands start adding joint-care and digestive support ingredients, though a healthy cat does not need to switch on the exact day they turn seven — it is a general guide rather than a strict rule.
Can kittens eat regular adult dry food?
It is better to avoid it. Kitten food is generally more calorie and nutrient-dense to support rapid growth, so a dedicated kitten recipe such as the James Wellbeloved or Iams kitten ranges is a better fit than an adult food during the growing months.
What is added to most senior cat foods?
Taurine and glucosamine appear across most of the senior recipes we stock, reflecting common joint and general health changes as cats age, and some, like Purina One Senior 7+, add a probiotic as well.
My senior cat has a diagnosed health condition — which food should I choose?
General senior food is formulated for healthy older cats rather than a specific diagnosed condition, so if your cat has an existing health issue, it is worth discussing the right food with your vet rather than choosing based on label claims alone.
